That Make Up questions we all want answered…..

We asked Mariska Swart a Freelance Make Up artist & Lecturer at Face to Face Beauty & Make Up School all the Make Up questions we struggle with on a daily basis.

1.How can I do an easy smoky eye? (Actually easy)

The true answer to getting an easy perfect smoky eye is that there is no quick fix way! Reason being all eyes and faces are unique. With most things in life, the old saying “practice makes perfect” counts here as well. The best way to do a smoky eye is to start with the basics. Know where you want to add the darker color(usually the crease or the outside corner of the eye). As soon as you know that you can start practicing. Start out with a brown or even a light grey until you have the blending bit down. Apply the dark shade in such a way that you can barely see it when facing yourself in the mirror.

That way when you blend(or smoke out) the color, it won’t end up at your brows. Using an eye shadow brush (yes an actual eye shadow brush, not your fingers) will go a long way with helping the blending go smoothly. Do your eyes first so that if there is any mistakes you can fix it when applying your full foundation. Keep the brow bone (area below the brow) as clean as possible and for events or extra drama add some highlighter. Now as soon as you are happy with your light smoky, you can go on to darker shades. Remember this has a lot to do with playing around to find what best suits you and what you are most comfortable with.

Big secret tip: a shimmer eye shadow will blend waaaay easier than matt colors specifically black.

2.. How can I easily apply liquid eyeliner?

Liquid eyeliner is one of those things that will make many females run and hide out of fear! If you make use of gel liner, make sure to have the proper angled liner brush.

When applying the liner lift up your eyelid just above the lash line to get a tight line above your lashes, you can always thicken and lengthen afterwards. Most people find that the liquid eyeliner pens (which literally looks like a coloring marker) work better as it gives more control. These markers or brushes work in exactly the same way as a normal marker or brush would.

Most people find that the liquid eyeliner pens (which literally looks like a coloring marker) work better as it gives more control. These markers or brushes work in exactly the same way as a normal marker or brush would. If you press too hard too much product will be applied, if you slant the brush a thicker line will be achieved and if you use the very tip of the brush, you will have a very thin line. Again do not try this the first time on an important first date or event. Practice on yourself with only eyeliner until you are confident enough with the technique. Small mistakes can easily be fixed with an ear bud soaked in makeup remover. (Obviously not if you have a perfect smoky as per question 1 and then ruined it with liner)

3.What is the proper order of applying my makeup

There is usually a set way in doing things but with any art form the rules are meant to be broken. Do what suits your lifestyle best.

I usually moisturize first (for oily skins use a mattifying product otherwise your makeup will end up sliding all over your face.)

Step2: apply foundation on the eye area. (If the shadow tends to crease and sweat off, invest in an eye shadow primer)

Step3: powder the eye area with translucent powder to remove the stickiness. This powder won’t leave color on the skin.

Step4: eye shadow then eyeliner. If not confident with liner yet do that first then shadows and fix liner at the end if the shadows has smudged over the line.

Step5: mascara, mascara, MASCARA. This deserves its own step as this product transforms any eye from dull and tired to awake and sexy.

Step 6: remove any panda eyes with a remover wipe and apply foundation over the face and concealer under the eyes. Powder the areas that you are prone to sweat or have oil. Usually the forehead, nose and chin. Step 7: add some color by using a blush and lip color that works well with the color used on the eyes. Do not use purple on the eyes and expect an orange tone lip and cheek to work out. You will look like a hot mess. Pinks stick together and

4. Do I really need lip liner under my lipstick??

Yes lip liner is a must. Once you have used one properly you’ll never be able to go back to applying lipstick as irresponsibly. The waxy consistency of a lip liner keeps the lipstick from bleeding into the little lines and cracks around your mouth. Liner also allows you to fix tiny flaws in the lips if the one side is lower down you can draw it higher up etc. Want fuller lips? You can line slightly outside your natural lip line to create the appearance of fuller lips. Again ladies the emphasis is on SLIGHTLY! Bozo the clown lips does not look good on anybody. The biggest bonus that a lip liner has is that it will help your lipstick last a lot longer.

Keep your liner color a shade or two lighter or darker to your lipstick color depending on the look you want. DO NOT do dark liner with light lipstick as it is very distasteful. And best be left In the history of makeup fails.

5.What should I use to keep my makeup on longer?

I love mac fix it spray. There are many of these makeup fix sprays on the market these days so shop around until you find your perfect one. When in a pinch you can always use hairspray as well- If you don’t mind the fumes. This will basically seal your makeup and result in it not sweating off within the first hour out.

6. Contouring or Strobing?

I prefer using a touch of both!! Contouring to sculpt features and then using highlighters to make certain features pop! I like to have the best of both worlds.

** in makeup my biggest tip is to always start small and build up from there. One can always add color and drama but it is a lot harder to remove without messing up the whole look entirely.

While Keeping up with Kendall Jenner…we noticed she has been wearing this amazing MUST HAVE ITEM……okay maybe its more of a want than a need, but do you blame us???

That black double buckle belt  just adds something extra, to give your outfit that statement it needs. Dating back to Coachella when Kendall first wore it. She has been rocking the monochrome trend & the gold detail on the belt just makes it look even more chic.

The “Power” Suit…

The power suit is a vital component of any man or woman’s wardrobe regardless of his/her profession. When i get dressed in my beautiful structured office wear i feel more at ease with myself….like i’ll be able to handle anything thrown my way. It gives you that extra boost of confidence.

It all started in 1920’s with a beautiful woman called Coco Chanel. Back in those days she kept it simple but so very chic…by pairing her power suit with a long string of pearls.

original_simplicity-coco-chanel-quote (1)

The rules around the Power Suit has changed quite a lot throughout the years. It’s not primarily about matching anymore.Bring in some colors or patterns, but essential to that is not overdressing. Its always important to know your audience, whether you will be appearing in court or a meeting at a well known fashion house.

When I think Power Suit, my mind immediately wonders off to that matching structured black blazer & Tailored Trouser. These days you get the pencil skirt, midi knee length & floor length.Blazers in different colors & those amazing heels to bring the entire look together.

I say experiment with your power suit , bring in different textures, keep it simple & elegant but  always make a statement.

So you had an awful, tiring week. Meeting after meeting. Rushing to gym. Rushing home. Traffic. Preparing dinner. For one. Need I continue?

Or maybe you spent the week in front of the T.V., binge watching Orange Is The New Black and I Live With Models, and come the end of the week you need a pick me up because you feel like crap? To be quite frank with you, Lush Cosmetics is the answer in your time of need.

Lush Cosmetics, originally from the UK, opened its doors in Cape Town in 2012. So yes I know, it’s not a newbie to some people but even now, three years later this mostly vegan cosmetic shop who doesn’t test on animals is still booming with a few new stores all over South Africa and even the rest of the world, including Brazil.

Lush has certain strong ethics and when you visit their webpage you can look at all the fresh ingredients that they use, all environment friendly. And okay fine, if all of this haven’t persuaded you yet, it’s yummy! It’s colourful, it smells divine, in fact it looks like a Charlie and The Chocolate Factory store, but it doesn’t make you fat. Yes it’s fashionable if you will and lastly, but the most important, they have products for every need, every person, male or female, different types of skin and for every part of your body. From your hair to your toes. Yes, they have a sugar foot scrub which looks good enough to eat.

Starting from the top, Lush has some very interesting products you can use for your hair. Shampoo bars which look like Macarons (what) looks and smells good enough to eat. Conditioners, some of them also in a form of a soap bar, and shampoos with different flavours like banana are the most interesting products ever. They even have a range of dry shampoos. The reviews for all of these products are exceptionally good. The price varies from ZAR 75 to ZAR 295.

Next, the beautiful face. Yes, they cover that too. Masks with cupcake flavouring, I almost ate it, needs to be kept cool. It makes your skin so soft. The oatfix mask helps with scarring and to make your face feel fresh. The Brazened Honey face mask smells a bit funny but leaves your skin detoxed and soft. All of them go for ZAR 125.

lush 3

The next part, your body, is probably the most spoiled body part when it comes to Lush products. They offer different kinds of soaps with names like “Honey, I washed the kids” and “Dirty Soap” which you can cut and weigh yourself to determine the price. Trust me, you can’t get enough. Their worldwide best seller is a body butter called Buffy ZAR 125 which leaves you and your skin wanting more. Jelly shower gels and bath clay will even entertain even the little ones in your home.

lush 4jpg

Probably the most talked about Lush product, is the bath bombs with “little surprises” inside of them. Names like “Dragons egg” and “Sex Bomb” are to be expected amongst them. When you put these in your bath it will fizzle, maybe change the colour of your water and little hearts, glitter, jelly roses, confetti and even seaweed will appear in your bathtub. Even my fiancé is obsessed with these bombs. ZAR 46.99.

LOVE: The fact that they are mostly vegan and use fresh products are good enough. Also that the products look interesting and good enough to eat. And finally, their prices aren’t bad at all when you compare them to similar places.

LUST: The smell of the shop as well as all of the products. You can smell the shop from about a mile away.

LOATH: To be honest, nothing. Except maybe that some of the products come in small packaging, which means after about four uses it’s all finished.

I beg you, find you nearest Lush Cosmetics store and have fun in the playground. They have so much to offer for literally everyone. For the perfect night in, for that much needed rest and TLC, I promise you, you will be in heaven. Buy a “French Kiss” bubble bar ZAR 55, a “Soft Coeur” Chocolate Massage bar ZAR 78 and some champagne (not available in Lush stores) and spend the night in your bathtub with candle light 😉

The hottest hair trend for this season—— The Half Bun.

The hottest hair trend for this season is without a doubt the half bun. That in bed-hair, dishevelled look, but kinda cool style at the same time. And it’s sudden origin? Well, if you think about it, it’s not really that sudden after all.

Remember those mornings where you roll out of bed with a shameful headache after a not so shameful night? Well it’s shameful if you think about it now. Yes, it’s those mornings where you just grab your hair and roughly do something with it to feel a bit better about yourself. At least you tried.

Or those late sunny Saturday afternoons where you decide THIS is the day I’m going to go through my closet and donate to charity. Then just end up in the middle of a pile of clothes which you want to keep just in case it’s going to be trending in a few months.. Or years. Who cares? At least you know you’ll have a pair somewhere in your closet. If you think back to that Saturday, you probably did your hair in a half bun. Because it was easy and out of the way.

Now I’m going to blame it on men. Just like all the other things we have to blame them for. I present to you, the Man Bun. Since that trend started everything changed and we all kind of drifted to the half bun. Yes. It’s unisex. We see you, Jared Leto.

Well. Come to think of it, it doesn’t really matter where or when it started, but the one thing you should know, it’s classy. It’s on the red carpet. It’s vintage. It’s hot. Well this season it can be anything you want it to be. And it’s everywhere.

Admittedly, this style is a bit odd. It’s like your hair had an identity crisis: it’s not a ponytail, yet it’s also not a full-fledged bun. Some people might think you forgot to put the rest of your hair up or that you’re going through a rebelling phase. Regardless, it’s fun and easy to do, so why not get in on the look yourself? It’s really an easy style but here are a few tips and tricks if all else still fails:

Tease your hair before you create the bun. This easy tip will help to create a fuller bun, as well as give you more to work with. Tease the part which you want to be in the bun before tying it. Especially if you have thin hair, this tip will solve the problem. Using some hairspray while teasing your hair will create a perfect texture. After your hair reach the desired texture, you can twist it into the perfect half bun.

Use powder on your hair. If you have very straight hair and the bun has trouble staying in style, sprinkle some powder in your hair to give it a better grip. It will prevent your hair from slipping out and prevent the hair tie from sliding and drooping.

Play with the positioning of your half bun. For an edgier look, try placing your bun on top of your head. Position your bun right at the crown of your head for a cute, casual look, or wear it low for a sophisticated style.

Try curling you hair if the ends of your hair are straight, blunt, and keep popping out of the bun. If you want to keep the rest of your hair straight, that’s OK, just lightly curl the ends of your ponytail to give it a curved shape so it spins into a bun flawlessly. This will prevent the ends from sticking out and coming unravelled. If you’re looking for more of an edgier look, you can fishbraid your hair before creating the bun.

If you have dark hair and a few unfinished touches from your roots or scalp are showing, use eyeshadow that’s the same shade as your hair to colour those parts. Just take a brush and lightly dust over the lighter parts which aren’t covered when you have a high bun. As easy as that. No one will know 😉

And yes because it’s unisex, you and your partner can totally match, if that’s your thing.

That POLO Neck…..

I remember when i was little my wardrobe consisted out of 10 different color Polo Neck Sweaters…..looking at that photos i ask myself & my mother why oh why….( luckily i can use my age as an excuse )

Today the POLO Neck,Turtle Neck or Skivvy whatever you would like to call it…is a definite go to style item.

1fbb07c6aff747e01e805d5419066dbb1. Style it with that perfect pair of high rise jeans add a classic black or tan belt to give it that edge.

2. Add that perfect coat or trench to pull off that super chic winter look.

3. Throw it back to that vintage Polo Neck style, by adding a suede mini skirt to the mix.

4. Luckily for us the over sized knit is quite on trend at the moment, style it with a basic leggings, jeans or midi skirt. So comfortable & easy to pull off & that basic black boots makes an powerful statement.

5. All one Color:  #allblackeverything #allwhiteeverything the list goes on ,  I’m obsessed. This is the ultimate definition of simplicity.

6. I’ve heard people say , they feel the Polo Neck makes them look quite “MANLY”… we say just  add that beautiful minimalist jewelry , simple as that.

7. This one is on top of my to do list.Wear that Boyfriend collar shirt over the Polo Neck.

Even better when that polo neck is adding a pop of color .

No more nightmares about that childhood memories I have about the Polo Neck. Keeping it stylish is the aim of the game.
